Advanced Options Dialog, PostScript Tab

Contains controls to set PostScript options to be used when printing.

SettingDescription
EPS Raster Header

Specifies the type of raster header to be attached to the PostScript file for EPS plots only. A raster header displays a low-resolution representation of the actual EPS contents when placed within a document. An EPS file generated with no header is displayed as a gray box with a text description in the top left corner.

TIFF is the most widely used and reliable header type. EPSI is black and white only and is not always recognized. The raster header is used for display only in the new document. On plotting to a PostScript device, the full EPS detail is printed.

Line Frequency

Overrides default line frequency, defined in lines per inch of dot patterns used to represent grayscales or colours on a print. If off, Bentley Advanced Map Finishing uses the default line frequency of the print device.

Typical values:

  • 60 for a 300 dpi laser printer

  • 150 or more for high quality printing plates from a 2400 dpi image setter.

This setting causes the output file not to be device dependent. For example, if a setting of 70 is defined, the same value is used regardless of the device resolution. 70 lpi is used on both a 300 dpi and a 2400 dpi device. Using a higher setting on a 2400 dpi printer produces better results.

Device Resolution

Overrides the default printing resolution in dots-per-inch.

Typical values are 300, 600, and 1200.

Include EOT(^d) Character

Places a control D (^d) character (ASCII character 04 decimal) at the beginning and end of each output file, unless paper type EPS is used. The ^d is not required to enable PostScript to work but can improve the operation of some printers.

If a PostScript file is sent to a printer that is not idle (processing or waiting) and the file has no ^d at the start of the file, the output could be affected by residual settings made by the previous PostScript file. For example, an A4 plot may be printed on A4 paper. When the PostScript device returns to idle, the device returns to default settings. Some devices and software systems require the first characters of a PostScript file to be "%!PS". If the ^d character is present, the file is not considered to be PostScript.

Embed PFB Fonts

Determines whether PFB font files will be downloaded/embedded when using non-resident font styles. Turn off for preliminary plots to reduce processing time.

Line Join

Determines the shape of corners in PostScript paths. If a Mitre join is used and the angle between the lines being joined is too small, a Bevel join is used instead. The threshold for the angle is controlled by the Mitre Limit parameter.

Default Cap

Determines the type of default line-capping used.

  • Square - symmetrical extension in the form of a square (or block).

  • Round - smooths line-endings with a semi-circular extension.

  • Flat - square ending without any extension. The line is ended immediately at its vertices.

Photo Reduce Line Weights

Photo-reduces line weights either by paper size or percentage.
